Chapter 9
The next morning, Zoey took a call from Hope, who simply said, “I have an idea. I’m coming over.”
As the two women sat in Zoey’s office, it was hard for Zoey to keep her mind on what Hope was saying. Her mind kept drifting back to the warnings Lillian had given her. Every time she thought of them, a chill went through her that seemed to settle in her bones. Was it true that there was a super secret branch of the United States military dedicated to finding people who had trouble controlling their magic and removing them from society? Did that mean killing them?
And were Zoey’s residents the next targets?
“Are you listening to me? I don’t have all day.” Hope glared at her.
“Sorry. What did you say?”
“I said I made you a truth serum. All you have to do is get it into something that Doug eats or drinks and then you’ll have fifteen minutes or so to ask him anything you want. He won’t be able to avoid the question or answer with a lie.”
Zoey’s eyebrows shot up. “Really?” She took the vial of liquid Hope held out to her. “Is this legal?”
Hope shrugged. “It’s super mild, and all the ingredients are legal.”
Zoey noticed Hope avoided answering the question directly, but she didn’t press her. She was intrigued with the idea of using the potion to get some answers out of her boyfriend. But then her conscience caught up with her and she set the vial on her desk. “Shouldn’t I just be honest and confront him with what we saw? Ask him to explain it without a truth potion? If I don’t believe him, I’ll just break up with him.”
Hope studied her perfectly manicured nails. “I suppose if you want to be boring, you could do it that way.” She lifted her long lashes to look at Zoey. “But this has more . . . finesse.”
Zoey chuckled. “I’ll think about it,” she said, ushering Hope toward the door. “Thank you.”
She paced around the office for a few minutes, wondering what to work on. It was hard to focus on anything with thoughts of Lillian, Doug, and Sonja bouncing through her head. After a few minutes, her eyes fell on Hope’s vial, and she picked it up, rolling it in her palm thoughtfully.
Well, she might not want to use truth serum on him, but she did want to hear what Doug had to say about having lied to her. She grabbed her phone, punching in a text inviting him over to have Chinese takeout with her for lunch. Then she chewed her bottom lip while waiting for his response. It came quickly, a yes followed by two happy-face emojis.
She called in an order to their favorite Chinese place and waited twenty minutes before heading over to pick it up. When she returned, she stopped to ask Kelli to hold her calls unless it was an emergency and to have Doug head back to Zoey’s office when he arrived.
